Review: Botlierskop Private Game Reserve

As part of our road trip, we stayed at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve for 1 night. We drove from Knysna for about an hour before arriving at about noon time. Just in time for our afternoon game drive! When in South Africa, a Safari game drive is one of the best experiences you have to go for.

Package and Cost

We purchased a One Night Full Board package, which includes the following:

  • One night in Luxury Tent
  • Welcome drink and snack
  • 1x Morning game drive (3h)
  • 1x Afternoon game drive (3h)
  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner daily
  • Beverages & Snacks on game drives

For 2 persons, the full board room rate per night is R9200, which is about SGD 1000. The rate for room- only is R5400 (SGD 600 approximately). However, I strongly recommended getting the full board, since the game drives are the key highlights and delicious meals are worth the extra top-up.

Here’s my review of the overall experience:

Accommodation

We stayed in a deluxe tent (twin share). The tented accommodation are a distance away from the main reception area, so we have to take a buggy ride every morning and evenings when heading out or returning to rest. And after which, we had to take a self-pull river raft to get there. I would say, these made up the ‘safari’- living experience!

And as the name suggests, the interior was quite luxurious. A bottle of sweet red wine was also included on our little side table, a rather nice touch.

As it gets quite cold at night, the large and comfortable bed also comes with an electric heating blanket.

The bathroom(s) included an outdoor shower, and indoor bathtub. The toiletries included were pretty good too. As there were roaming animals within the area of our tents, I got a shock and I heard banging noises very nearby while I was showering outdoors. Thankfully, the tent was intact and my safari experience was enriched as a result! Haha.

Food

Upon arrival we had our welcome champagne and had lunch for our first meal there. For each meal, at least 3 courses were included, and we were able to select from a menu. As luxurious as the restaurant interior was, the food served were delicious, and certainly met our expectations.

For the adventurous, the restaurant also has game meat options which are definitely worth trying!

Safari Game Drives

Each game drive was about 3 hours long, and as part of our package, we had 2 included. My most favourite session was the morning one, as the overall sunrise atmosphere made the experience quite surreal. Then again, the afternoon drive was great as well, as we also got to see many animals close up! The snack break in the grassland was nice as well, and we also got the chance to take some cool pictures with the 4WD truck.

Service & Facilities

The staff were very polite and we had no complains at all during our stay.

The game reserve also has an in- house spa, with rather reasonable rates. So it’s an excellent way to relax and chill during your stay. Due to time constraints as we only had 1 night there, we did not go for that option although the hot stone massages were quite tempting!

Other than safari game drives, the game reserve also has activities such as Horseback Safaris, Horseback Outrides and Guided Bush trails. There are also special activities for children as well! For the full list, you can refer directly to their website.

Conclusion

I totally recommend staying at Botlierskop for 1-2 nights, and do get the full board for the complete safari experience! It was one of the more expensive item in our entire trip, but was well worth the money! I would say it’s suitable for friends, couples and family with kids as well.
