My family and I went to try Samgyetang in a few locations around Seoul, and I would like to say that Tosokchon Samgyetang really serves the best. Don’t skip it just because it’s ‘touristy’! As I’d usually like to think, some things are touristy for a damn good reason.
As the queue is expected to be long during usual hours, we went there earlier, at about 10.30am and didn’t have to wait. True enough, when we finished our meal at about noon, the queue outside formed, largely from tour groups. Thank goodness!
GETTING TO TOSOKCHON SAMGYETANG
The nearest station to Tosokchon Samgyetang is Gyeongbokgung station. Speaking of which, it will make a good plan to visit the Gyeongbokgung Palace after your meal!
Each set comes with a small bottle of real ginseng, which is to be added to the soup before you start! I like the slightly ‘DIY’ aspect of this, it’s fun, and makes the dish feel really legit cos you know you are having real ginseng in it! We were also served a really strong alcohol made from ginseng.
I love samgyetang, especially the chewy, soft glutinous rice inside (a whole chicken by the way). It’s the ultimate korean comfort food. We also had some kimchi pancake to go with, which was equally delicious.
I haven’t been to all the samgyetang places in Seoul, but of those that I’ve tried, Tosokchon serves the best.
If you have even better ones to recommend, please let me know! 🙂
